DEVELOPMENT OF CHOREOGRAPHY
The idea behind this book is to give the technique of figures that have been developed and are used by many of the leading couples. The major development has been the increased use of split beat rhythms, as it has been in Latin American dancing. Fashions in choreography change as they do in anything else, however the figures chosen for this book have a fundamental base and have stood the test of time.
The use of these split beat rhythms has increased flight and therefore the amount of movement over a bar of music. Dancers will now join a number of bars together, using split beats, to gain an effect of speed and movement. This was not the accepted choreography many years ago. However a judicious selection of split beat movements coupled with contrasting slower movements can look very beautiful and can create an exciting musical effect. The suggested combinations given at the end of the technical descriptions of each figure are those, which are popular and will enable the dancer to create interesting choreography. However, many other combinations may be used.
